It All Started on a Bus in Switzerland
Yup, whilst crammed into the window seat of bus twisting and turning through the Swiss Alps, I opened up my laptop and started writing content for what would become the Motmill blog. I was at something of a turning point in my life, on holiday from a job I loathed, and was looking for the next step.
Two years later, Motmill is brimming with helpful stories, tips, and guidelines for the young (and young at heart) who are forging their own paths in this life. Whether you have entrepreneurial ambitions, a desire to explore the world, or you share the belief that every new day is an opportunity for self betterment, it’s my hope that you’ll find motivating words of encouragement throughout these posts.
The inspiration for Motmill came from the experiences I’ve had over the course of my twenties and the career trajectory that has been anything but a linear process.
After developing a healthy hatred for the corporate lifestyle, I started my own freelancing business and leveraged the remote nature of that work to travel the world. Barcelona, Paris, Istanbul, Belgrade, Tokyo… all places I was able to experience on a deeper level through the lens of a local because the work went where I went.
Traveling is still a bit shaky at the moment, but I’m freshly vaccinated at the time of writing this and I can’t wait to get back to exploring once the world allows it.
Because I made that decision to take the path less traveled, I unlocked opportunities that may not have been available had I climbed the corporate ladder. I’ve seen more things that most experience in a lifetime, I’ve parlayed my unique experience into gigs and positions that would have otherwise been beyond my breadth, and I’m now enjoying life as a full-time entrepreneur.
I want everyone to know that there are other viable possibilities out there beyond what the status quo dictates, or what society deems “safe” and “logical”. I hope you enjoy reading the content here, and if you ever want to reach out and chat, feel free to send me an email.
Be happy,
Tom
